Cold storage:
utilising space and storage density

Cold storage solutions are required for temperature-controlled warehouses storing fresh and processed foods for chilled or frozen storage. SKUs include meat products, fruit and vegetables, milk products, beverages and other perishable goods. Products must be easily accessible for quick distribution.

Cold storage warehouses grapple with a unique set of difficulties compared to regular warehouses. These challenges stem from the very nature of their function: maintaining specific low-temperature environments for preserving perishable goods.

Challenges facing cold storage warehouses

Stricter regulations

Cold storage facilities are subject to stricter regulations regarding hygiene, sanitation, and food safety protocols. Maintaining compliance with these regulations adds an extra layer of complexity to warehouse operations.

Energy efficiency

Keeping entire facilities at consistently cool temperatures requires significant energy consumption. This translates to high electricity bills and pressure to find ways to optimise energy usage without compromising product quality.

Maintaining temperature and humidity control

Different products require specific temperature and humidity ranges for optimal preservation. Balancing these varying needs across different storage zones within the warehouse can be complex and requires robust monitoring systems to prevent spoilage.

Warehouse capacity and optimisation

Effectively utilising space within a cold storage facility is important due to the energy costs associated with maintaining large volumes. Warehouses need optimized storage solutions to maximise capacity without compromising product accessibility.

Solutions from stow for cold storage

Overcoming these challenges requires a comprehensive approach, from investing in energy-efficient technologies and upgrading to newer, more energy-efficient refrigeration systems to significantly reduce energy consumption up to automation and robotics. Automating tasks like product picking and movement within the cold storage facility can improve efficiency and minimise the need for staff to work in harsh conditions for extended periods.

stow’s systems can help you reduce the energy costs by using the available area as effectively as possible. High density storage and warehouse space utilisation are key factors to the industry, due to high running costs per square metre.

High performance, maximum autonomy

The stow Atlas® pallet shuttle system is a deep lane storage and retrieval system. The heart of the system is a carrier used to move pallets within a specifically designed racking structure. This results in an optimised storage capacity. Works in temperatures from -30° C upwards.

Increase storage capacity up to 90%

Where storage space is expensive or scarce, for example in cold stores, mobile racking is the perfect solution. Adding pick & deposit stations on the ends of your stow Mobile mobile racking system might further increase the warehouse efficiency, resulting in a higher return on investment. Each mobile racking and storage system can increase capacity up to 90% compared to conventional pallet racking systems and may lead to a significant decrease in lighting, heating or cooling costs.

An AS/RS system for totes, cartons or trays

stow’s automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS), called the Miniload Multi-store, is used for storing totes, cartons or trays (goods) in a beam typed rack. With depth supports between the beam, the goods can be stored. The advantage of this system is that different sizes (width/depth/height) of goods can be stored within the same system.
